Based in Manchester, Emily Jarratt is an abstract painter who struggles with anxiety and depression, which she explores through her artistic practice. Rather than addressing these conditions through direct visualisation, she uses the process of making art as a form of distraction and a way of calming her mind. Her work consists of pieces varying in sizes that examine patterns and shapes within her surroundings. Each artwork follows a structured process, providing a sense of organisation and control that contrasts with the chaos of her thoughts. She begins with an image focused on a specific pattern or shape, which is then developed digitally in photoshop. During this stage, she experiments with colour combinations to find the most visually effective. Once finalised, the design is transferred onto a surface and painted. Most importantly, her practice is based around the meditative nature of painting, relieving any stress and allowing her to fully immerse herself in the process.
